Recovery
ChondroFiller aftercare after an injection: why the surgical timelines online do not apply.
If you had ChondroFiller® liquid as an ultrasound-guided injection and searched for recovery, you probably found a surgical timeline. This page explains why that timeline belongs to a different procedure.

The short answer
The surgical timelines online are for the keyhole implant.
The manufacturer’s rehabilitation material was written for ChondroFiller placed during arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery. For that route it describes a brace for 48 hours, weight returning gradually over about 6 to 8 weeks, and high-load sport at six months or later. Those are the figures most searches turn up.
An ultrasound-guided injection is a different procedure: there is no surgical wound to protect and no implant to bring into load in stages. Its aftercare is set by the clinic that gave it, and the manufacturer publishes no rehabilitation table for the injection route.

Two routes
What belongs to which route.
After keyhole surgery
After an ultrasound-guided injection
- The injection is given through the skin under local anaesthetic, with no incision.3
- Clinic aftercare sheets for this route typically set out no brace and no crutches or walking aids unless the clinic specifies otherwise, in place of the surgical staging described opposite.
- The one published injection study, in the base of the thumb, used a thumb brace for two weeks. That is specific to the thumb and is not a rule for other joints.3
- The manufacturer publishes no rehabilitation table for the injection route, so the plan comes from your treating clinic.
Typical injection aftercare
What injection aftercare sheets typically set out.
The stages below are what clinic aftercare sheets for the injection route typically describe. They are a general picture, not a prescription, and your own sheet takes priority.
Days 1 to 3
A quiet start
Light, necessary activity only. No brace and no crutches or other walking aids are used unless the treating clinic specifies otherwise; you walk, but you do not do much of it. Ice through a cloth for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, several times a day, is the usual advice.
Weeks 1 and 2
About half your usual joint activity
This is the period in which the gel is expected to settle into the defect. Sheets typically ask for roughly half your normal activity involving the treated joint, with short, light walking for a knee and no long walks, impact or targeted exercises.
Weeks 3 to 6
A graded return
Duration, distance and intensity are increased in stages, with gentle strengthening if advised. If stiffness, clicking or discomfort rises with activity, ease back briefly and build up again more slowly.
Around week 6
Clinic review
Clinics typically review progress at about six weeks and adjust the plan from there.
Months
Repair tissue builds slowly
Repair tissue is expected to build over months rather than days. In the published thumb study, most of the improvement came between two and six months after the injection.3
When to get in touch
Questions to take back to your clinic.
- How much activity is right for my joint in the first two weeks?
- When can I return to work, driving, exercise and sport?
- Which symptoms should I call about, and who do I call?
- When is my review, and what will it cover?
Increasing pain, marked swelling, redness, heat at the injection site or a temperature are reasons to contact your clinic promptly rather than wait for the review. This website does not give medical advice.
